Biopsy Aftercare

Instructions to Help Heal Minor Wounds

Wash wound with warm soapy water daily and clean hands before and after touching the wound or changing bandages.

Apply a wound care ointment like Aquaphor Healing Ointment or Bacitracin to the wound 2x a day, or as needed to keep the wound moist.

Use bandages/band-aids in the first few days to protect tender wounds and to keep them clean and moist.

Stay away from ocean bathing, baths, swimming pools and hot tubs until your wound is completely healed. Showering is permitted.

Wear loose-fitting clothing over the wound to avoid rubbing, which may cause irritation.

Contact your physician if you experience the following signs and symptoms of infection:

  • Excessive redness and tenderness of the affected area. Some swelling and tenderness is not unusual for the first 1-2 days.
  • Yellow or green oozing from the wound
  • High body temperature
  • Cold sweats and chills

All patients must make a follow-up appointment to check the wound site and to receive results.

RESULTS CANNOT BE GIVEN OVER THE PHONE. If at the time of follow-up, it is determined that you require more attention, the Doctor, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will discuss the options for treatment and further surgical appointment will be scheduled if needed.

Additional Instructions for Sutured Wounds

Refrain from using aspirin, ibuprofen or alcohol for the first day after surgery. If you should experience any discomfort, you may take over-the-counter medication containing acetaminophen.

After surgery, go home and limit your activities (no exertion, lifting, bending or straining).

A follow-up appointment is mandatory in order to remove the sutures, check the wound site and receive results (if necessary).
